Cervical Cancer Treatment in Thane
Cervical cancer starts in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. It is strongly linked to long-term infection with high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). It develops slowly, which is why screening can find changes before cancer forms. It is part of our wider gynecological cancer care.
Symptoms
- Bleeding after intercourse, between periods or after menopause
- Watery, blood-stained or foul-smelling vaginal discharge
- Pelvic pain or pain during intercourse
- In advanced disease: back pain, leg swelling or urinary problems
Early cervical cancer often causes no symptoms at all, so screening matters.
Screening and prevention
- Pap smear and/or HPV DNA testing at the intervals advised by your gynaecologist
- HPV vaccination, ideally before exposure, as advised by your doctor
- Avoiding smoking, which raises the risk of cervical cancer
Diagnosis and staging
An abnormal screening test is followed by colposcopy and a biopsy. If cancer is confirmed, MRI or CT (and sometimes PET-CT) are used to stage the disease and to see whether the tissues beside the cervix, lymph nodes or other organs are involved.
Treatment by stage
- Very early stage: cone biopsy or simple hysterectomy, and in selected cases fertility-sparing surgery such as trachelectomy.
- Early stage: radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymph node assessment, by open, laparoscopic or robotic approach depending on suitability.
- Locally advanced: chemoradiation is usually the main treatment, delivered with radiation oncology colleagues.
- Advanced or recurrent: systemic therapy, and in selected cases surgery for central recurrence.
Frequently asked questions
Is cervical cancer curable?
When found early, cervical cancer has high cure rates. Outcomes depend on the stage at diagnosis, which is why regular screening is advised.
Will I need a hysterectomy?
Many early cancers are treated with hysterectomy, but not all. Your options depend on the stage and on whether preserving fertility is a priority.
How long is recovery after surgery?
Recovery depends on the operation and approach. Minimally invasive surgery generally allows a shorter hospital stay than open surgery. You will be given specific guidance before you go home.
