Gallbladder Cancer

Gallbladder cancer is a rare but aggressive form of cancer that originates in the gallbladder, a small organ located beneath the liver responsible for storing bile. It often goes undetected in its early stages because symptoms are vague or absent, making early diagnosis challenging. Common signs may include abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), nausea, vomiting, and unexplained weight loss. Risk factors include chronic gallstones, gallbladder polyps, certain infections, and genetic predispositions. Treatment depends on the stage of the disease and may involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of these. Early detection improves outcomes, but prognosis is generally poor in advanced cases due to late diagnosis and rapid spread to nearby organs.

  • Location: Gallbladder, beneath the liver.
  • Symptoms: Abdominal pain (right upper quadrant), jaundice, nausea, vomiting, weight loss.
  • Risk Factors: Gallstones, chronic inflammation, polyps, obesity, certain infections, genetic factors.
  • Diagnosis: Ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, biopsy, blood tests (tumor markers like CA 19-9).
  • Treatment: Surgery (cholecystectomy), chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy in select cases.
  • Prognosis: Better if detected early; often poor in advanced stages.
