Peritoneal Cancer

Peritoneal cancer is a rare type of cancer that originates in the peritoneum, the thin layer of tissue lining the abdominal cavity and covering the abdominal organs. It often behaves similarly to ovarian cancer and may either start in the peritoneum itself (primary peritoneal cancer) or spread from other organs such as the ovaries, stomach, or colon (secondary peritoneal cancer). Early stages may show vague symptoms, making diagnosis challenging. Common signs include abdominal swelling, pain or discomfort, loss of appetite, nausea, unexplained weight loss, and changes in bowel habits. Diagnosis typically involves imaging studies, blood tests (including tumor markers), and biopsy. Treatment often includes a combination of surgery to remove visible tumors and chemotherapy to target microscopic disease. In selected cases, heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is used to improve outcomes. Prognosis depends on the cancer stage, extent of spread, and response to treatment.

  • Definition: Cancer of the peritoneum (lining of the abdominal cavity).
  • Diagnosis: Imaging (CT, MRI, PET), blood tests (tumor markers), biopsy.
  • Prognosis: Depends on stage, tumor spread, and treatment response; generally better with early detection and aggressive management.
  • Treatment: Surgery to remove tumors, Chemotherapy (systemic or intraperitoneal) & HIPEC (heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy) in select cases
