HIPEC Surgery

HIPEC surgery, or Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, is an advanced treatment used for certain abdominal cancers, especially when they spread to the peritoneum (lining of the abdomen). The procedure combines cytoreductive surgery (CRS), where surgeons remove all visible tumors from the abdominal cavity, with the direct application of heated chemotherapy drugs into the abdomen. The chemotherapy solution is heated to around 41–43°C and circulated throughout the abdominal cavity for 60–90 minutes. Heating enhances the effect of the drugs and helps them penetrate cancer cells more effectively, while limiting systemic side effects since the drugs stay mostly within the abdomen. HIPEC is commonly used for cancers like peritoneal carcinomatosis, ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, and mesothelioma. Although it is a complex and lengthy procedure, HIPEC has shown promising results in improving survival and reducing recurrence in selected patients.
